History

Construction

Construction of the LOTUS began in 1982 under the guidance of Sri Swami Satchidananda and took four years to complete. Four years, 40,000 cubic yards of earth, and 1.6 million mosaic tiles later a monument to interfaith understanding was born.

Opening

On the morning of July 20, 1986, LOTUS was sparkling in the sun. Near the shrine’s Grand Archway over 3,000 people gathered to witness as the Light Of Truth Universal Shrine was dedicated and offered to the world.

Founder

Sri Swami Satchidananda was a leading proponent of interfaith understanding. His motto, “Truth is One, Paths are Many,” has been celebrated around the world.
